About Western Heights Defences

The Western Heights in Dover are remains of fortifications built mainly during the Napoleonic Wars when England was under a real threat of being invaded by France. You will discover miles of trenches and the remains of the two original forts and the Grand Shaft staircase which has been restored and is open to the public. The Grand Shaft is a unique 140ft triple staircase which linked the town of Dover to the forts. The shaft was built as the only way for troops to move between the Western Heights and the seafront and it has been described as an architectural marvel.
