a Seaside Town in the county of Kent

About Margate

Traditional seaside resort which is famous for the invention of the covered bathing machine. This was invented in 1753 by Benjamin Beale, a Margate Quaker and glove-maker. The machine fascinated people from miles around and drew vast crowds from London. At this time tourists from London came by sea in what were then known as "Margate Hoys" passengers alighted at the stone jetty built by John Rennie. Later, with the advent of the railways tourists flocked to Margate from all parts of the country, which they still do to this day.

Margate's pier was always known as the Jetty, this was completed in 1815 but was destroyed by a storm in 1978. Today, this once important fishing port remains the central seaside resort for Londoner's. Its seafront is lined with magnificent Victorian houses, some now turned in to gracious hotels and apartments. There are lovely gardens to stroll around, and glorious golden sands to bask upon. For those who like bright lights and music there are amusement arcades and a vast funfair. A theme park offers a scenic railway, water chute, picnic garden and other leisure activities.

Included in the enormous selection of entertainment facilities is a theatre with first rate shows - Margate's Theatre Royal dates from 1787, this is the second oldest theatre in Great Britain and the oldest to remain in its original state. There is an interesting parish church dedicated to St.John, this stands on the site of a former chapel of ease built around 1050. The present church has a long and fascinating history, it shows many treasures including fine brasses and is well worth a visit.

A "must do" whilst in Margate is take a fishing trip or a boat trip out to sea, this is one of the best ways to fully appreciate the beauty of the Kentish coast.
