Standing sheer on a dramatic headland the twin towered west front of the 12th-century Church of St. Mary at Reculver is the principal feature of an historic Roman site. The surrounding landscape shows only fragments from the forts former buildings but there is sufficient to add interest to what is now a country park and caravan site, with the caravans following the fort's line of ditches.
This is very much a summer place, it is maintained by a partnership of Kent Wildlife Trust, English Heritage and Canterbury City Council. Overlooking the Wantsum Channel, the park offers a multitude of opportunities for enjoyment including bird-watching, particularly migrating birds, and walks along the Saxon Shore Way. There is plenty of wildlife to explore and in the information centre visitors can learn about the history and geology of the area.
Reculver Country Park is two miles east of Herne Bay. It is open all the year round with the opening of the information centre restricted to between March and October.
