About Mareham le Fen

This pleasant Fen village was mentioned in the Doomsday Book, but it's history is known to stretch far beyond 1086. It has several delightful thatched properties and a number of old mud and stud buildings now encased in brick. One of the oldest buildings in the village is the attractive Royal Oak Inn which occupies a prominent position facing a wide grass verged lane. The building carries the date 1473, this however has often been questioned, thus the building may have been erected a little earlier.

The village church, dedicated to St. Helen is well worth seeing, it is constructed from local sandstone and is noted for its beautiful stained glass. The church is believed to date from around the 12th century.

Visitors to the village will find a friendly welcome, there are a few shops and scattered farms, but the years since World War II has seen a demise in amenities despite a flurry in building new housing.

Worth a mention is that Mareham-le-Fen was home to the Green Howard regiment and searchlights operated from within the village.

Mareham-le-Fen gives easy access to the seaside resort of Skegness on England's eastern coast, to the rich fen lands in the west and to the lovely Cathedral City of Lincoln.
