About Metheringham

Metheringham is an old Lincolnshire village with a history stretching back to the Doomsday Book of 1086. It was virtually obliterated by a fire of 1599 when only a few of its properties survived.

The local parish church is dedicated to St.Wilfred, this is believed to date from around 1600 but has a tower showing Norman work of between 1180 and 1200.

Today, the village is noted as the home of Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre which celebrates the village as the base for 106 Squadron who played an important role in the Battle of Berlin during WWII. Visitors to the site can see many original buildings from the daunting days of war. The old ration store has been restored to provide an interesting exhibition gallery with fascinating collections relating to life on an airfield during wartime Britain. At the site you can view the memorial to 106 Squadron and the remains of old concrete runways.

Metheringham also has an original George VI post box sited outside the modern Co-op building.

The village is found in a broad Lincolnshire valley, close to the Metheringham and Timberland Delph's and the meandering River Witham. It is within easy reach of the town of Waddington and the beautiful Cathedral City of Lincoln.
