About Langcliffe

Langliffe is a small picturesque village in North Yorkshire, North of Settle, and East of Giggleswick, and sits within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
A cross and fountain War Memorial stands In the center of the village commemorating the men from the village who lost their lives during the first and second world wars. There are 15 names etched on it, 11 of which died in the first world war, and 4 in the second.
The pretty village church dates from 1851 and contains memorials to the distinguished Dawson family of Langcliffe Hall, and the church altar-frontal was made from a dressing gown that belonged to Lord Halifax - the former Viceroy of India.

Other places of interest nearby are Samsons Toe - a large boulder which is around 8 feet high and shaped like a giants toe. There is a local legend surrounding the rock that says the giant was jumping across from Langcliffe Scar or Ribblesdale, and broke off his toe in the process, however, it is more likely that the rock was carried to its resting place by a glacial flow 12,000 or so years ago during the last ice-age.
Another local attraction is The Hoffmann kiln - which was built at Langcliffe in 1873 and is now an important reminder of the areas industrial history.
