About Hartburn

This is a wonderful place to be, especially on a bright summer day when the sun beats down relentlessly. For all around are cooling, dramatic waterfalls dropping down to the Hart Burn from which the village takes its name.

At the heart of the village lies the lovely church of St.Andrew. Said to date from the 13th-century, the church shows early masons marks, beautiful carvings, banners from the Napoleonic Wars and Florentine lamps. Light streams through the arched windows, dappling walls and floor in differing shades. The overall effect is of peace and cool serenity. In the shaded churchyard interspersed between the grass are graves and tombs of several centuries.

A place of interest to all visitors is Hartburn Glebe Woodland, managed and cared for by the Woodland Trust. Here there is a rich variety of woodland species following the lie of the River Hart Burn. The area is designated as of Great Landscape Value and is home to red squirrels and otters as well as to a wonderful array of rare and beautiful wild plants and flowers. There is a grotto, a sandstone bridge and lots of quiet walkways. It is an ancient woodland which is surrounded mostly by gentle arable fields and pastureland grazed by sleepy cattle.

Like almost everywhere in Northumberland, Hartburn lies in a superb secluded position between the undulating countryside of Meldon Park and Scots Gap. It is twice blessed being twix the River's Hart Burn and Wansbeck thus offering a fascinating landscape with a wide variety of stunning scenery.

Walking, fishing, cycling and boating are popular visitor past-times. A short distance to the north lie Rothley Lakes and Fontburn Reservoir, both have immense natural appeal with a wealth of nature, either destination makes an interesting day trip for all ages. For those wishing to spend time in the region there is an excellent choice of accommodation, good pubs and restaurants and plenty of visitor attractions. The North Northumberland Heritage Coast is within easy driving distance.
