About Littleborough

A settlement has stood on Littleborough's fertile landscape since Roman times, in fact the Roman Army entered the county from a nearby crossing of the River Trent.

At one time this was a thriving village, now all that exists is a few scattered cottages. What the area does have is the natural charm of unspoilt fields and waterways. The lush meadows of the area are watered through a series of dykes built to ferry water around the region. These meadows are rich with crops and wildlife.

Another little "gem" of the area is the church dedicated to St. Nicholas. This lovely little church stands on a slight mound, it is surrounded by a small number of ancient tombstones, one bearing the date 1848. It is approached through an old gateway and the church building has twin bells topping a short bell tower. The church, no longer used as a place of regular worship, remains consecrated and is cared for as part of England's history by the Churches Conservation Trust, for the benefit of future generations.

Also of interest is the old sluice gate and a George V post box.

Littleborough can be located a short distance east of the town of Retford where there is an interesting museum. There are several attractions in the region as well as the pleasant city of Gainsborough.
