About Bossington

Interestingly, Bossington belongs to a group of villages that often appear to be remote and cut off. The fact that they are in tranquil, a little out of the way places, to me, seems more of a blessing than a curse.

The lovely village of Bossington lies on the edge of Exmoor and from Bossington Hill there are fantastic views overlooking Porlock Bay, Hurlstone Point and the sands of Minehead Bluff. The many pretty cottages appear to be mostly built of stone under a tiled roof, a few are of the whitewashed black and white variety with thatched roof and charming beamed interior. Some are creeper clad and nearly all have the tall chimney that is traditional of these parts. Neat little gardens are surrounded by railing or hedge through which you can catch a glimpse of spring flowers whose early growth is caused by the mild climate enjoyed in this protected coastal region.

One of the most convenient routes to Porlock Bay is through the village, the wide vista of the bay is picturesquely spread at the foot of Bossington Hill. A track leads to a spot where a shingle bank is crossed by a rippling little stream and it is best that you leave your car here and take a gentle stroll. The shingle sand is soft enough to allow for sun-bathing but the sea current is turbulent and not suited for swimming. There is safe sailing from the pretty harbour at Porlock Weir.

The countryside all round is soft and gentle. A strong farming community exists and interspersed along narrow lanes are several attractive old stone farmhouses, surrounded by rich meadowland and slow, grazing cattle. Ancient churches can be found so too can old inns that offer a tasty meal to be consumed with a refreshing pint of somerset Cider.
