Rowlands Gill and surrounding areas are heaven for ramblers, wildlife enthusiasts, children, botanists and anyone else who loves the old-fashioned English countryside. I hope to be putting on some more pictures of the village and environs in the near future. When people speak of the River Derwent they usually do not associate it with Newcastle and Gateshead. Perhaps due to the Mining Industry, the countryside has not been developed into vast swathes of Agricultural land. There are ancient woodlands, small meadows full of wildflowers, deer, foxes, badgers and a variety of birds, icluding the famous Red Kite. Anyone deciding to holiday here will have a magical time. And there is Newcastle and the Metro Centre on the doorstep for those wanting culture and shopping! This place has everything! The people are delightful too.

Anna: Welcome to POE. The area around Rowlands Gill is quite lovely. I especially like the ruins of Gibside Hall with its Palladian chapel.
