Gordon Alfred Cavell

Hi Gordon, welcome.  We have a member here who's very good with genealogy.  Good luck with your inquiries.

I'm half Irish and half Lithuanian, James.  Three of four grandparents born in the old country, as they used to call it.  Nobody from the UK that I know of.  My husband's mom has traced her side back to Nottinghamshire, but ages ago - 17th century.

If you have any kind of British Isles heritage, you'll have English, Irish, Scotch, Welsh, Danish, Roman, Saxon, etc. etc. etc.  lol  I'm going to take this over to the Good Day thread, so we don't hijack Gordon's inquiry, James.

Hi Gordon---after a quick check , I can only find Gordon Cavell on the 1901 Canadian Census at Magog, Stanstead Co., Quebec. They put his year of birth as 1895, then his birth day as 17 Jan, aged 6.

Father Alfred born in England 25 Dec. 1871 and arrived in Canada 1880; Mum Nelly, b.12 Jan.,1869 and Gordon and siblings Charley and Florence, all of whom are Canadian-----alledgedly.   Canadian 1901 Census refers.

March 25, 1916----Gordon Alfred Cavell enlists for the Canadian Forces. Details given are: born 17 Jan. 1895 at Magog, Que. He's an assistant chemist, getting married in 20 days hence. His next of kin is Nellie Cavell living in Magog, Quebec. He possibly was sent to the 117th Battery; Canadian Army, Service number 748914.

So, it would appear the link back to England is his father Alfred who arrived in Canada when he was about 11.

His sister Florence on 13 Nov. 1922 arrived at Newport, Vermont---probably by ship-- en-route to Schenectady, NY. She was 5 ft 1 inch in height and 21 years old, and born in Magog, Quebec. Her father Alfred is a metalurgist, and she is going to visit him in Schenetady where he lives at No.8 12th St.  Her next of kin in Canada is her brother Charles of Magog.

Florence also states she had previously  visited the US in 1912 though might have been 1911; she's not sure. 

US Border/Immigration cards 1922; Newport, Vermont refers. 

Gordon's father and brother are also in the Canadian Army, possibly drafted.  First, Alfred on April 10, 1916 service number 749012.   Born Ramsgate, Kent 3 January, 1869.  Previously had served 2 years in the 26th Dragoons as a cook. [1901 Can. Census has dob as 25 Dec. 1871].

Brother Charles Henry Cavell on 7 Jan, 1918----   born 25 June 1897 at Magog, Quebec.Service number 3081121. 1st Depot Battalion, 1st Quebec Regiment.  Lives on Main St, Magog.

I haven't been able to find a birth in Kent to match this info Paul!

The closest is Alfred William Cavell registered Dec 1869 Eastry. However, Alfred William was still in England through to 1911.
