Enlisted in Manchester and joined the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers; service number 40310. He was awarded the Victory Medal. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial on the pier and face 3C, so I presume his body thus wasn't recovered. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiepval_Memorial Edited by: Paul Hilton at:25th September 2011 17:16 |

He was a fruit salesman. In 1890, married Mary Jane Keeling, b.1861 and had children Peter, May, and Victor. By 1911, they were living in Old Rd, Blackley, Manchester. I think Peter died in 1924, and Mary Jane in 1938 though there are discrepancies to their actual years of birth. Mary J possibly 1859. I'll have to check their births. If May stayed in the area, then I believe she married James Wakefield in 1933. All locations referring to all are Manchester areas; usually north. So far not found the previous wife though. The spelling is a bit off in the census found the one lot under Romfret!! I found the family on three different census and Peter's birth date various between 1850 and 1853, Mary J between 1860/1. In all the census Peter is listed as a fruit salesman - seems to have been born in Warrington! |

In 1918, Peter Pomfret married Marion H Tighe, Manchester area, so think that is who James is refering to; Victor's brother and his wife. I had noticed that 1888/1890 discrepancy too, and very likely, there's an earlier marriage of at least their father, Peter, so Peter/Victor might be half-brothers.
