We call them sweets here too, as Denzil said 'candy' is used in the  USA. We call them sweets cos they're made of sugar which is sweet, why are they called candy Ruth?
I'm made of skin and bone, so should I be called leatherhead?

Denzil---by odd co-incidence, my wife calls me Paul in the night too. Whoever this chap is, I'm sure he'll get his come uppance one day.

Ron---your dictionary seems to have a lot of words spelt with only the first and last letters. Presumably one of those foreign ones such as  W......s Dictionary.

Awhile back you said I was going to be in for a hard time. Who me? I thought it was another expresion you were using refering to what the actress said to the bishop.

Seriously though, I think I know what you meant. As they say, A nod's as good as a wink to a blind horse.

Last week I thought I was nearly caught by the Old Bill on the M4 in my jam jar and was getting ready to be prepared to use Shanks pony instead, for some time. Hopefully not.

I seem to have missed your point there, Ron. I used to use Websters Dictionary as a kid growing up; I thought you must have a copy of his version as well, but thought I'd only the first and last letters of Daniel Webster's name, as a bit of a puzzle to work out. i think you might have had the wrong answer, such is the nature of the English language.

Actually, that should be Noah Webster's dictionary; not to be confused with the great American orator and statesman Daniel Webster, equally adept with the English language, who I'm sure, would have enjoyed this forum. But, we do seem to have the English version of him in Ron, who's just said he's not. Are you sure, Ron?
