I remember Woolworths being in the town though but not like it is today....old creeky wooden dusty floors, sold anything you could wish for, and Sainsbury's as it used to be, not like the supermarket chain of today. The butter was patted out for you between 2 wooden slats, the cheese cut to your requirements and the bacon sliced as thin as you liked and not pumped full of water!

The wife and I were only talking about Woolworths yesterday. The big slab of fruitcake with marzipan and iceing toping for 10p, and the large chunk of procesed cheese for 10p. They both tasted wonderfull. What happened?

All the counters were solid Mahogany. And it was the cheapest shop in town.

Yes Peter, nothing was over 1d (old money!) when they first opened. How about the broken biscuits? You wouldn't get them now. I don't think Health and Hygeine would stand for it today with all the dusty floors they had then, just like the old hardware shops that had simply everything you could want in them, piled high up to the ceiling. The Co-op was another shop where you could buy anything, such an old fashioned shop we had here with departments for everything, and a staircase that wound up to the next floor in dark mahogony. They had such character, that is until they were demolished to build a monstrocity they call a Shopping Centre.

You mean the Mall or as they say in the U.S of A, the Mawl. lol

At least you used to get personal service in those days Lyn. Remember Marks and Sparks? Used to be the penny store at one time.

Yep thats the word I was looking for...Mawl LOL Oh yes M&S, I remember it well. Do you remember in the Co-op when they took your money and put it in that thingy that went shooting along the ceiling to the cashier? I was fascinated with that when I was a kid lol
