After nearly 20 years of driving buses in my region and dealing with 3/4 million passengers, I could fill 50 pages of this thread with no effort of things done for many of these passengers; other road users; people I came into contact with otherwise, and there's animals as well in a distressed or dangerous situation they'd found themselves in.But, what point would it serve for me to do so? In my current job, a similar situation exists and people are helped in several ways. As on the buses, sometimes they ask and sometimes they don't, but makes no difference from my point of view.

I have found you don't have to look for opportunites to help or assist or make someone's day in some respect. They are presented to you daily, day in and day out, and it's up to you whether you want to do anything or not.No one will force you, will they?  99% of the time, it won't cost you a dime; very little of your time, and not much effort, but can make so much difference to someone. Sometimes even the smallest thing can mean a lot.

Sometimes I reflect on the words of President John F Kennedy when he said, " If not you, then who? If not now, then when?   I thought those words might possibly reflect partially of the spirit of this thread that Sue had in mind when she thought of it.

Mr Paul the invisible man.

I always give people a smile and a nod when I pass them, and if I can help someone when they are in difficulties I will do so, so will my lads. The other week a fella screeched to a halt outside out house, his tyre had burst, and who was the first one out there (and the only one I may add!!) to assist?.....One of my lads! The fella was very grateful but said he only lived round the corner so it was not a problem. I've dragged Wink up my lads to be polite and helpful cos you never know when YOU may be in the same situation and need help!

I believe we can all do something no matter how busy Sue. As you know I am self employed and have 3 young children. My fight this year is to save Saltwells House which is a landmark in our precious Saltwells Nature Reserve up for sale for possible development. We collected over 1000 signatures in February. The sale has fell through so we are back to square one. We fought for our school two years ago and saved that. It was 120 years old last week and we never thought we would be celebrating it. Everyone can make a difference in their local area - we may not be able to save the world but we can put up a good fight!!

I hope you are luckier than we were in my village, trying to stop them building one of those horrible new housing estates on land that the kids used to play on, all the petitions in the world wasn't going to stop it, and in the end they built anyway. We had a new bypass built to take the traffic away and what did they do? They built the housing estate with one entrance in and one entrance out....in the village! So good luck Steph, keep the petition going you never know!!!

Hi Lyn, Paul and Wolf! Thnaks - I will keep going - apathy is the biggest problem in our country! I do agree though Lyn, sometimes you can't win but it's worth making them sweat a bit!

I can’t help wondering how many people we actually help without even realising it, just a smile from a passing stranger brightens my day, a friendly shop assistant, a helpful receptionist, making somebody feel that they are important just by listening to them, it’s not only the big gestures in life that help people but the little insignificant one’s that we all do every day. It’s the small things that we can do to make someone else’s world a better place that has a knock on effect. Everyone’s idea of a “better place” is different but for me it’s just about being polite, tolerant, courteous and the best person that I think I can be. If everybody in this world did a little that would result in a huge change.

Just for a laugh you can see my awful picture in the paper! We had to be miserable!

Lyn, I agree, we are lucky around here because there are so many friendly faces and although I would love to live in the country I always fear that I might not be so lucky somewhere else. I get so many people telling me how polite my boys are because there are so many young people being brought up without being taught manners these days.

wonderful posts here!

Stephanie, are you all able to get a grant or something from the lottery to restore the property??  good luck with it all.

Paul, like your last paragraph and agree with that!

when doing grocery shopping, or any shopping, if anyone is in uniform...police, fire, military i always let them ahead of me.

last week when  i went to the dump, the car in front of me had alot of trash.  i only had one bag, so on the way to deposit it, i grabbed some of the gentlemans stuff as well to help him.
