I also love the fact that you don't tear a building down just because it's old. People truly care about the character of the landscape.

What I miss about England? Where to start....

I miss trees with leaves and without, grass, rain, rivers with water in them, good dark brown mud. Blue Tit's, Great Tit's, Nuthatches and Tree Creepers oh and the Common Jay and the Robin and Blackbird (better stop there).

I miss Bert, my friends Jackie, Caroline, Patsi, Judi and cousins Brian and Sue. Pauline, Sue and Chris. Mavis up at the Mill and Trish.

I miss going up the road and down the lane and across the field.

I miss the wonderful programs about nature on the telly.

I miss being home.

The quality of light in the British Isles; the greenness and pleasantness; the amazing public transportation system; Salisbury Cathedral; York Minster; driving on the left of the road from the drivers seat on the right; dew; York City Wall; pub grub; mushy peas; Remembrance Day poppies; the beauty of the ruins of the Dissolution; the wind in Whitby; the rain in Skipton; the blue sky in Helmsley; the sunlight on the North Sea; every square inch of North Yorkshire that I either tread upon, rode past, or gazed at; the sheep; the stone walls; the British Museum, the teensy little London hotel rooms; our great flat in Fulford; the cool and exotic groceries in Sainsbury’s; moors, dales, fens, fells, the Vale of York; the whole atmosphere of just being in England.

Like Sue, where to start....

waitroses, excellent transportation system (even in villages!), NHS (sometimes), the countryside, quaint pubs, decent fish and chips, excellent PC magazines and photography magazines, cheese scones, castles/ruins, narrowboats, proximity to Europe!

As a Brit, here are a few of the things I would definitely miss:- the smell of cut grass, the sound of a skylark spiralling upward in the sky, the sound of the sea on a shingle beach, exploring country lanes, especially in Summer, a good pint of bitter, woodland walks and rivers with their associated wildlife and wild flowers.

Lewis house, Leeds Castle, London, Harrods, Tea at Browns Hotel, Royalty and all it's pomp and circumstance, fish and chips served in news paper, the Routemaster Red Double Decker Busses, Pub grub....

The pubs. The women.Don't miss the bloody weather.Actually what I miss the most, what I always go back to in my minds eye,are the trains and the towns that were on the way to where ever.Did I mention the pubs and the women? The beer was warm, but the ladies were always hot.

I would miss the countryside. My shopping places. Public transport (which is great in Liverpool) as I don't drive and places like the USA are too vast for non drivers. True that the trains are miserable though over here. I would just miss being here full stop. I would however love to visit so many other countries. I'll always be glad my feet are back in Britain though. I'm too old for change, even though the country is going downwards (thanks to politicians).
