"To demolish 700 homes is bad enough, but demolish a Church and bulldoze a graveyard"?

On the subject of bulldozing graveyards, I seem to remember that Portsmouth City Council did a similar thing (albeit on a smaller scale) a few years ago when they revamped a road system on the eastern side of Portsmouth, they said that they HAD to change a (perfectly good) roundabout at a busy junction to a traffic light system. Main problem with the idea was that the junction would have to be expanded to accept the muliple sets of traffic lights, this meant taking a corner off a graveyard. I remember there was a lot of anger about this in the local rag but as there was also a lot of reassuring statements by the council that the graves that had to be disturbed would be treated with the greatest respect and dignity and re-buried according to relatives wishes, so everything would be alright then.........Or would it !!

The contractors employed by the council went in with their JCB's and completely decimated (or should that be desicrated) the "corner" of the graveyard, there was eyewitness accounts (and a few photo's) of bones lying in the road and even workmen throwing bones in a skip.

So don't hold your breath about any remains that they move being decently re-buried, hope that the Tories get in and scrap the whole thing.

That's a terrible story David, and yes lets hope the Tory Party get in and will put a stop to it.
