Well, if David Cameron (Tory) has his way that's what you will be doing by the year 2016. Some said on the television this morning that he would lose votes as a result, why? I would bet that if you asked the majority of 'older' people whether they want to retire or keep on working, they would opt for the latter. We are living longer, want to work longer and above all the State cannot afford the high levels of debt that we 'olduns' will cost our kids! Well, what do you think POE 's people? Should we be forced to retire at all?

They are planning that with Labour anyway Ron - I won't get my state pension until I am 67! Alot of my accountancy clients carry on working as long as they are able. Most can't afford to retire with the poor pensions the self employed get - my favourite gripe - we pay two lots of NI as self employed and get worse pensions!

I think you should be allowed to work as long as one would like, I mean the kids starting out working these days here dont want to work so why not keep the ones that do!  And your right Stephanie who can afford to do it!

I don't know about Britain, but here in the US many people are finding that the economy has eaten right through any savings for retirement they may have had. Many at the age of 66 don't have much of anything to retire on. Either they continue working to support themselves as long as they are physically able or they end up living off of welfare.

I intend retiring next year at 55, will have to fund it myself though.

I work as a self employed gardener and even now find it hard going. There is no way I could keep it up until I am 66!!

Anyway, I hope it is extended to the 'Public Sector' to stop them taking early retirement with a pension  that is more than many people get for working for a living!

The BBC page here shows how an employer currently doesn't have to employ someone beyond their 65th birthday, even if the employee wants to continue working.

 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8274328.stm

And it was recently reported that somewhere between 20% to 25% of Council Tax money goes towards funding local government pensions; presumably Final Salary schemes that the private sector is struggling to keep financing, often opting to close them altogether or stop new employees from joining them.
