OK, how many of you celebrated Shrove Tuesday by having pancakes (that would be English pancakes, known as Crepes in the States)?

We had them for breakfast, served with the traditional lemon and sugar.

No pancakes--just Paczkis (about 600 incredibly delicious calories each--yikes!).

Paczki (pronounced "poonch-key") are incredibly rich deep-fried filled doughnuts that originated in Poland and were made exclusively for the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. They can be filled with various flavours of jelly or (my favourite) custard. I erred in adding an "s" to the end of paczki since that is the plural of a single paczek (pronounced "pohn-check." They are a staple around Michigan prior to the beginning of Lent and there are often long lines at bakeries to buy them. They are to die for--and with all the fat and cholesterol in them, I mean that quite literally! They are a real "red-light" food for me!
