It is a parade with like none I have ever witnessed. It starts as a march through historic Battle by several hundred people all dressed up voodoo style, some in skeleton suits, and others as court jesters, others all painted up in all manors of scary ways. Most will be holding burning torches or banging a drum ectera. They all march past Battle monastery. As they pass a few of them will throw a few torches onto a pre prepared unlit bonfire. The parade will pass the monastery and continue on to the 1066 battle field were there is another pre prepared unlit bonfire. This one is the size of your average house. The majority of the parade tosses their torches onto it and then put on the mother of all fireworks display. It is free, and well worth a visit. Because of the terrain it is not disability friendly though. One important point. Although there is a rail station nearby the calibrations, and awesome firework display carry on after the last train has gone. Miss it and the next one is 7:30am the next day. http://www.battelbonfire.co.uk/Edited by: Dennis Bailey at:22nd October 2010 23:28 |
