Model asked for public caning

Model asked for public caning
A Muslim woman appealed for a public flogging after she was caught drinking beer
pa.press.net
A Muslim model who will be caned for drinking beer has said she asked Malaysian authorities to punish her in public instead of in a prison, but they refused to go against official procedures.
Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, is scheduled next week to be the first woman in the country to be flogged under Islamic law after she was arrested in a raid and sentenced by a Sharia court for drinking alcohol at a hotel lounge last year.
"I want to send a message that I really regret what I did, so I want to be punished in front of other people," Kartika said from her northern home state of Perak. "If other Muslims can see me being caned, I hope it will convince them not to drink."
Kartika said prison officials turned down her request, saying she would be lashed six times with a rattan cane without any public witnesses some time early next week. Authorities have insisted Kartika would not feel much physical pain because the rattan cane would be smaller and lighter than the one for men, and its purpose was to "educate" rather than punish.
Kartika's penalty has led to criticism by some politicians and women's rights activists who said it was still too harsh. The law provides for a three-year prison term and caning for Muslims caught drinking, but most offenders are fined. Drinking is legal for non-Muslims.
Kartika said officials indicated she might have to stay inside the prison for several days starting Monday ahead of the caning, but she would be separated from the regular inmates.
"I feel relieved. I was not afraid of the caning, but I was afraid of the environment in the prison. Now they said they will make me comfortable, so I'm satisfied," Kartika said.
Kartika said she has explained the matter to her seven-year-old son and five-year-old daughter.

"They both don't really understand, but my daughter told me, 'Mama, you must be strong.' Now I feel brave but sad that this is not only a punishment for me but for my family," she said

Yes, when you think we used to behead people in this country up to a couple of hundred years ago, but hopefully we have moved on. Problem is there are those here in our own country who are trying to introduce Sharia law, indeed practicing it behind closed doors. do we pass by on the other side of the road? as you say, I'll mind my own business.

If it happened in THIS country the law of this country (rightly or wrongly) would prevail and it would be treated as assault. Whether the police would do anything about it given the muslim issue is another matter (they seem to be frightenend of their own shadow these days), it really comes down to the fact that if you know that your breaking the laws of a country (no matter how much you disagree with the punishment), expect to be punished (unless you live in this country of course).

Interesting that Kartika doesn't have a problem with it. I wonder if that's really how she feels or if she is afraid of a more severe backlash against her family if she protest too much? You are quite correct, Ron. It is none of our business...at least until the people revolt and ask for help.
