Yeah, sorry to have to tell you lovers of animals and birds that I was driving along a country road today when a pigeon flew out in front of me. Couldn't do anything about it, bang! Big cloud of feathers but when I got out of the car I couldn't find the pigeon, looked everywhere for it! However, just as I was getting back into the car I noticed it was wedged in the grille at the front with it's rear end facing me. I wasn't about to remove it, so I drove the car home and parked it where Anna wouldn't see it. Hopefully, come tomorrow Anna will drive away and somebody will tell her she has got a bird in the grille, she'll think she did it!

Aww Ron you are awful lol

I can go one better Ron, a few years ago I was driving to work as you do minding your own business when this stupid pheasant decided to wait till I got to it and then ran out right in front of me!  I couldnt stop in time so it hit the drivers side of the car...smashed right into the wing! I looked in my mirror and found it decapitated on the road (bet that hurt!) sorry all you bird lovers but I couldnt do anything about it! Cry I suppose I could have picked it up and had it for dinner lol.Wink When I came home from work I have to admit to driving the long way back so I couldn't see it lol Embarassed

Birds aren't stupid.....well I must admit, Pheasants do seem to lack a few brain cells, poor things. I came across a freshly mown down pheasant, dead but still warm, so I plucked it's long tail feather and it sits in my curio cabinet with all my other feather finds.

I'm sorry about the pigeon and I'm sorry about the pheasant, but these things happen, sadly.

Every year at this time I do many drives from Worcester to Cheltenham and am always saddened to see the badgers, foxes, rabbits, pheasants etc. lying dead in the middle of the road and whilst I realise that the world is full of famine and warfare and hardship....well, these creatures have only their one life too, don't they.

You have confused post!!!
You should have written this in "Birds you've seen today"! I imagine you treading on the accelerator fund, it's like something symbolic, isn't?? The poor pigeon carrying a sprig olive in mouth...

Birds you've seen today Ana? That's the point I did'nt see it! That's why it ended up facing the windscreen from where I was sat in the driving seat, and wedged firmly in the grille whilst sticking it's feathered little a....in the air from the front of the vehicle! I have actually sat here wondering what went through that poor little birds head as it hit the grille? I came to the conclusion that it was probably his a....!

In the 1980s driving along the M4 in Berkshire, a swan had just taken off from some close by lakes---and just spotted it about 2 seconds before it came through the windscreen at 70 MPH. An explosion of glass, roof dented, windscreen wipers and sun visors all demolished. The swan didn't fare very well neither ending up on the back seat.

The car was full of broken glass and feathers that took months to finally clear.

Fortunately, I've always managed to avoid just about everything else that wanders into the roads---dogs, cats, cows, sheep, badgers, rabbits, assorted birds, deer, snakes, all found on the quiet (?) roads of Berkshire.

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum despite being a member of POE for a good while I see!

I can't remember actually giving you the big welcome, and no doubt the members will follow in my footsteps rather than look back to see if we have been up this road before. I guess what it really means is annoy us all a bit more often, I mean for example...Peter!

They really are a great bunch in the forum who have fun, usually at the expense of Peter or myself but hey who cares, join in again soon. As for the story posted, that would be more than some shock to anybody, and I guess despite your ordeal you were lucky! Now comes the question that will get the members going big time so wait for the flak....did you eat the swan?

Thank you for your kindly welcome Ron. I had indeed noticed the occasional parry, thrust, and touche' of the keyboard from 1 or 2 members here ! To answer your question, and to duck any flak, I didn't eat the swan. Actually, I wasn't quite sure what to do with it, and ultimatlely left it on the hard shoulder.  The Highway Code doesn't seem quite clear on the point of finding dead wildlife in your car, particularly if it's owned by the Queen, as I think all swans are? Perhaps someone could clarify this, though since then, when going past J12/ Theale, I do keep an eye out for any more wayward swans from the lakes, trying not to re-create a variation of a Tchaikovsky classical composition with a movement in two parts.
