Ruth--as Dr. D. says, Mary had cockle shells in her garden. But, this nursery rhyme isn't as innocent as it might sound. The Mary refered to was Mary Tudor , aka Bloody Mary, daughter of Henry VIII and what was going on during her reign, or about herself. Opinions differ, but basically, none of the references all the way through are very nice, however interpreted. |
