I had this happen to me, I wasn't arrested, but they told me to destroy the film (before I got home they were at our house talking to my daughter in-law apparently, the guy had taken down my car license number apparently and called 911..called our house...and it turned out I didn't have the camera set up to begin with correctly, because it belonged to my daughter in-law and wasn' t my camera to begin with. I was down the street filming Mt. Hood an for web site I belong to, I guess this "ex" policeman that had bought an house in the new project part turned me in for possibly photgraphing his kids, or someone he was related to, all I know is that they were not on my mind... and I didn't really ever think of anyone being there in ways at the time. If you have heard of James Berkland on "coast to coast" that has the earthquake web site, he was the one I was sending it to, personally, not the web site to be posted. I was getting tired of this one gal posting pictures in the web site of clouds around Mt. Hood saying it was becoming active. That greatly bothers me, as I live within range to be wiped out by it if does an Mt. St. Helens eruption like in 1980. I dislike mis-information also. I just got his JOB's latest "newsletter" in the mail today that he puts out every month. His web site I was asked to join because of my "sensitivity" after an near-death expereince many years ago. I thought being an "geologist" also that he could see for himself.  So much for that one! There are amoung an few of us serious ones working with "science" those whom are out for the "attention" in what they say in such web sites, it really runs many of us off at times also.

Wow, what a sad world we live in, that you can get arrested for taking pics in public. I wouldn't hand over my camera to the police, unless they had a court order saying I had to.

I should be able to go outside, and take as many pictures I want. If it's not, my intent to use them to cause harm to someone but nobody would know my intent for taking the pictures anyway.

I went to a car show last month, and took pics of every car/license plate I saw because a  lot of them were amusing. :)

I dont know what the feelings or law is on taking photos outdoors in Canada. The letter I reproduced on here only applies to the UK.

Thanks for that info Peter. We shall see what happens, if anything, when we come to be taking pics and video footage for a dvd that we are going to produce on C. S. Lewis here in Oxford. The filming starts during the first week of September and will cover lots of very public places in the City and surrounding area. The dvd will then be available throughout the world, well the UK and North America anyway! We shall have to see if we can find a suitable marketing company to take it forward.......any offers?

I can understand why there would perhaps be cause for suspicion with some of the things listed above but historic structures and national landmarks? Have they never heard of tourism?

That's ridiculous, if you own a camera, shouldn't you be able to take pictures of anything you want? I get the concern for taking pictures of airports but your on vacation and want to take pictures. And historic structures and national landmarks? tourism?

Or you have friends, that haven't visited your town and you want to take pictures of the sites to share, your hometown with them? What you not allowed to? That's ridiculous.
