The origins of "codswallop" seems a little obscure though some attibute it to Hiram Codd and his fizzy drink which some considered of low quality, the wallop being a slang term for beer--alledgedly.

No Wolf, I wish the weather had been better...I could have got some crackers from the Tyne bridge (Newcastle for our overseas friends) but it was lashing down all day.
