Compressions are important for getting the oxygenated blood round the body, no good just putting air in if its not circulating. If someone has been down, an unwittnessed arrest, we do compressions before we shock, if in VF because the venous return engorges the right side of the heart, then if we shock straight of before we circulate that blood around, it shocks into a something called PEA pulseless electrical activity, because the heart is trying to pump but can't due to the build up. Well thats the theory and it does seem to work! ok lesson over!! i'm sure theres a cardiac consultant on here somewhere shaking his head saying no no no!! thats all wrong!!! |
