I wouldn't be surprised to see people try to assassinate Obama if he won. The KKK is quite big here. It is really a shame that people can't get past the color of skin.

I disagree gals. Ron, to my knowledge, there have never been any riots as the result of a presidenial election. We just suck it up and say the majority has selected. Although, in 2000, GWB did NOT win the popular vote. We have a very strange 18th century instutition called the electoral college that actually decides who wins. Each state has electoral votes, based on population. So large populatin states like CA or NY have many electoral votes, and small states like AZ have few. Whichever candidate wins the popular vote in any given state takes all that state's electoral votes. The winner needs 270 electoral votes. According to most polls, if the election was to be held today, Obama would take 355 electoral votes and McCain 156. But as we know, it ain't over til the fat lady sings, so anything could happen. But most Americans feel that the electoral college really is a system that has to go, and a candidate should win by popular vote alone. The beauty of our system is term limits. Our constitution prescribes that a president can only serve 2 terms or 10 years. We're just holding our breath right now until GWB is out as of January 20, 2009 (the date the new president will take office). If we didn't have riots when Bush was re-elected, we won't have any now. But if it weren't for term limits and free elections, you can be darn sure there'd be rioting now, to get Bush out.

I'm not really into all this but it's plastered across out TV screens on every News programme, so it's hard to avoid, but to me the colour of a persons skin is not important....It's ...can they do the job!!!??? |

The ironic thing is that McCain keeps saying Obama isn't ready for the job, but if he gets in and dies in office, is he saying that Palin is? She never even had a passport til last year. She's already showing that she can't handle the pressure http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20081025/pl_politico/14929

Previously done by tradition. F D Roosevelt served more than 2 terms of office; the only President to do so. |

So it's totally unnecessary now. One time when challenged on it, saying it defeated the purpose of a democracy to not have just a popular vote, Thomas Jefferson replied that the United States is not a democracy, it is a republic. Whatever that means. So I guess you could say that it probably has a little to do with the "elite" still having the ultimate say over what the "masses" want. PS - didn't you ever hear of the 8-hour work day? LOL
