The President who never was-----George Washington was the first president under the US Constitution of 1789. However, the US was an independent country for 13 years before the Constitution was signed. For one year during this time, John Hanson served as "President of the US in Congress assembled." Technically, he was the first President of the United States. Jefferson was the first president to be inaugurated in Washington, DC.

The US should have 51 states today, but one of them disappeared and became part of Tennessee. Can't recall the name of it though.-----It was the State of Franklin.

Whose John Hanson?...you mean maybe John Hancock?....did you know the first place they had the so called residence of the President was Philadephia, Pensyvania..that's wher ethey all were until Washingotn D. C. was built. for one thing GeorgeWashington and his fellow revolutionist's planned more of the Revolution from the pews of one St. George's Episcopal church, which later saw the Methodist curcuit-riders ordained there, I knwo, oneo fmy ancestors was it's preacher back then, and also, it was where America's first SundaySchool was started and the first church missionaries sent ou tinto the world from the United States, it is of course an historical church now. Betsey Ross was an member of it also. After Geroge Washington became President, his first action was to aask the peopelto stop all harassment of the Tories, and join in becoming "Americans" as by then in New york they had been taken "tories" and tied them to hand-carts in harassing them, henceforth the term "riding the rails". Hubby and I have as many "tories"in our family as we do revolutionists you know. As to what side you were on depended an great deal most the time on your wealth. I have many stories on them concerning both sides. BTW..I know an Paul Hanson...last time I saw him though was during an nasty blizzard we were having, and our tree and an nieghbors had gone down in the street so he knocked on our door asking for permission to drive across our lawn to get to his grandmother's house as the other street was closed due to downed trees also, and of course we said "yes, by all means,do so"...we have not had an winter that bad for about 40 years...I don't miss one either!  From an over turned cattle truck and and cattle "round up" and injured cow shooting going on, in the middle of the night, by scores of police, to an roof falling in at now "Boeing" setting off every transformer up the river to Bonneville Dam looking like some kind of an "bombing" taking place, to snow level even with our roofs...nope.. have not missed it at all. Prefer the gentler snowflakes coming down to an beautiful light snowfall. where everyone can get out and play an bit and it's gone off the streets in 1/2 an day. Besides I have an mountain some 35 miles away, I can drive to for skiing from about the end of November into Spring if I want snow.

I did mean John Hanson, Shirley.  He was the Delagate from Maryland who served for one year as President of Congress Assembled, under the Articles of Confederation, 1781-2. During his term, he'd done many things including establishing the US Mint, made Thanksgiving Day a national holiday, and founded the office of Chairman of Congress which was the fore-runner of the Vice Presidency.

George Washington was first inaugurated in New York, and thence moved to Philadelphia for his 2nd Inauguration, like you mentioned above.
