I have started getting Emails from myself. When I first saw one from my Email addy, I wonered how I managed that. When I opened it, it was about a news item. It seems that some clever dicks can pirate your Email address and send mail to others from your IP addy. So far it is not viruses that are beeing sent out, but I will have to change my Email address just in case. So if you ever get an Email from your own address, just delete it without opening it.

Hi Peter,   that's called 'spoofing' and there's basically nothing you can do about it.  The good news is that is mainly harmless as they are not actually sending mail from your address but only showing as it was.

When you see your own address spoofed in the From: field , it's happening for one of two reasons: either they're trying to spam you, and know that it's unlikely you'll block email from yourself   or they're trying to spam someone else, and what you're seeing is a bounce message indicating that the original spam was rejected by its intended recipient. Since the email looks like it came "From:" you, you get the bounce message.

That's why changing your address won't help; you (all of us) are already on spammers lists  to get spam and they're using that same list, or variations of it, to select which addresses to use when spoofing.

I wouldn't bother to go thru the address change , you should stop getting those soon.

Good luck ;-)

Thanks Maria. I realize that at the moment they are harmless, but how long will it be before they start puting viruses in them? Anyway, I have marked all mail from myself as spam now so no more Emails from myself to me? I just hope that my Email friends dont think that the spam is coming from me.

It won't happen, Peter, that's not their concern. Mind what you call 'they' are spam robots, not humans.  The worst it may happen is for your address to get blocked as spammer by others' ISP, but don't worry about that now as it really takes a remarkable amount of mails spread for that to happen.   Just wait and see how it goes.

Yes, that's enough , you may also create a rule in your email program to apply for messages arriving  from  yourname@yourdomain and sent to yourname@yourdomain.

Ron, how's my my fave PR then ? lol  trust he's fine..;-)

I got one the other day. I send myself emails all the time (testers when my ISP is playing up) but I knew this one wasn't from me so I deleted it.

Thanks for the information Maria.

Thanks again Maria. I have marked all mail from myself as spam in my inbox, so I hope that works.
