Seriously though, wouldn't it be nice to have a place like this to go to? Like the song says "...where everybody knows your name, and their always glad you came". Said he'd see me in the town's car parade we have yearly..he drives an little red sports car. But many of thepeople that came in daily were like that to me, not to the others because they never grew up here, but I did, I knewmost all of them for years. |

Shirley K. Lawson Posts: 2310 Joined: 17th Jul 2008 Location: USA | quotePosted at 20:20 on 4th February 2009 It's sad about the Coulmbia Gorge Hotel also right now..from yesterday's front headline news of the Portland, Oregon newspaper.."Landmark gorge hotel closes"..."hosted presidents and movie stars ranging from Shirley Temple to Burt Reynolds, built in 1921 as the "Waldorf of the west" with Eurpoean elegance and sweeping river views...for sale for 5.9 million...the time ran out and financing has ran out. Owners are Boyd and Halla Graves of Hood River. Others that have stayed there include, Rudolph Valentino, silent film actress Clara Bow, Pres. Roosevelt and Calvin Coolidge..average room prices now are $159 to $350..this thing sits on five acres of gardens with an stream that goes through it an falls down in an waterfall into the river at 208 feet.there's 39 rooms in it beside the well known restruant that people driving down the freeway stop in to dine at, and it says one of their problems is that it needs an adjcent built number of rooms to nightly rent out to carry over the costs of the operation of the restruant as well as the hotel...though if it gets bought by an large "chain" it would most likley have the finaincing without that needed...it was booked with 14 events before it even closed, and they say they are going to honor them I think as much as they can by opening the place up special just for these events. One of the people's favorites I guess was an Sunday summer champagne "brunch" where the guests could go out an sit in swings and on benches as they sipped their morning champange in the sunshine with an vista view it offered them. Last time I was there I know we had an pregnant lady (daughter) of one the other gals in our luncheon group whose favorte pregnancy treat was an chocolate old fashioned milk shake.,,her an hubby use to drive up there often to imbibe. If they put in the projected Casino an bit up the road from them, it would most likely have customer's constantly, but it sounds like that is not the problem, it's the cost vs the ratio of the rooms available to handle the cost of operating. I think I said yesterday that the people that first opened it were older then I was..by some 20 to 40 years, she says her 73 year old husband in 2007 had nine cardiac procedures alone, they are basically penniless to put more financing into it themselves...though she still has to find someway to support them. It was twice awarded the best romatic hotel in the nation, and named the 19th best hotel inNorth America by Travel and Leisure Magaine as recently as 18 months ago. So there you go..if your really wanting to get into something, it sounds like it's worth "saving" for prosperity in the years ahead. You could always buy it here, and open up an "sister" place in England..and make an "go between" them also...the best of both worlds as they say. It would keep Diana in Vacations that's for sure!!!....did you people know that most of the western coast range lands in Oregon were owned by an fella in England at one time, some years back, due to older age he also sold the thousands of acres he owned there also. Have never heard much about that since then either. by the way.... the local area is bound with natural Hot Spring Spa area's also, and resorts...as well as the famous "windsurfing" on the Coulmbia River and the fruit orchards of Hood River. It's possible drawback is the winter season, though it's not to far to the ski lodges of Mt.Hood. It's along side busy I-84 freeway from Portland across country eastward out of Oregon. |

We could have different themed rooms and the decor would match that room. For example we have to have an "Inklings" room to honor CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien, and we could decorated it with pictures of the men and maybe frame up a few book covers, etc. |
