I can not even begin to express how angry this makes me on so many levels and for so many reasons.Yell
This type of irresponsible behavior makes one believe in mandatory sterilization:

A big share of the financial burden of raising Nadya Suleman's 14 children could fall on the shoulders of California's taxpayers, compounding the public furor in a state already billions of dollars in the red.

Even before the 33-year-old single, unemployed mother gave birth to octuplets last month, she had been caring for her six other children with the help of $490 a month in food stamps, plus Social Security disability payments for three of the youngsters. The public aid will almost certainly be increased with the new additions to her family.

Also, the hospital where the octuplets are expected to spend seven to 12 weeks has requested reimbursement from Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program, for care of the premature babies, according to the Los Angeles Times. The cost has not been disclosed.

What I want to know is where did she get the money for the in vitro program to begin with?? And I think the Facility should also be held responsible for agreeing to do this. Don't they do background checks on these people??

It is extremely irresponsible to bring a child into this world if you cannot afford to take care of it yourself. Especially if you know that you will never be able to work because you cannot afford day care. Those children will suffer which will effect the way they turn out as adults.

I think Nadya needs a psych evaluation and I think the state should make it mandatory before she receives any further financial support!

I think you have good reason to be blowing hot Diana, it is as you say totally irresponsible! And the fact that Medi-Cal is to make a claim is the sort of stoke that I thought could only happen here, albeit a different name/company maybe?

You write>>>>Even before the 33-year-old single, unemployed mother gave birth to octuplets last month, she had been caring for her six other children with the help of $490 a month in food stamps, plus Social Security disability payments for three of the youngsters. Totally irresponsible of all those involved in this pregnancy in my opinion. It does make you wonder why you go to work each day, hold down a responsible job and get kicked in the teeth anytime day or night! The trouble is I can't see anybody wanting to change things because as soon as you or anybody else stood up and said what needs saying, somebody would shoot you!  Just unbelievable...

Cathy and Ron, you are both quite right in your summation; this woman is milking the system because she can. There are a whole hosts of others who bear culpability, from the doctors, to the welfare system, and the medical community in general.

Krissy, she is living with her mum and dad (who have also filed for bankruptcy). I saw an interview with the woman's mother, she is heartborken that her daughter has chosen this path. She says that her daughter does not know what she is doing to the children or to her, (the mother/grandmother).

Can you imagine being in your 60's and helping to take care of 14 children, eight of which are newborns?

Did you also see the mother of the children? She looks like a round Angelina Jolie look alike. I think there are some serious psychological problems going on too.

I don't understand how this happened either. I thought this sort of nonsense was a British phenomenon!!!! So sad that such a wonderful thing as octuplets surviving the birth is tainted like this. What a shame it couldn't have been some deserving couple who really wanted children.

I think you are right Sue; there are some serious psychological problems, and not just with her.

At any point during all of this did no one think to question the ethics behind it???
