Well, they are a part of ancient history of thousands of years ago, and they are indeed huge stones that mostly came from South Wales. You can get perhaps about 50 feet of them or so, unlike when I went in the 70s and you used to be able to walk right up to them. Distance? Well, I'd take the train from Waterloo to Salisbury, and then by bus I presume north, and Stonehenge is a bit west of Amesbury off the A303 at a Y junction you'll see on a map, not far west.

But, if you do get to Salisbury, the cathedral is well worth seeing.

I echo what Paul says, Debbie.  It makes for a lovely day away from London and the town of Salisbury and the cathedral are so much of what we Americans picture England to be.  The train ride is only about 90 minutes from London and the Salisbury city buses go hourly, I think, out to Stonehenge, about a 15-20 minute ride.  The countryside is beautiful too. There are a lot of pics on here of Stonehenge. I don't think you'll be sorry if you go, and it will be one more item your hubby can check off his list.  lol

Since you'll be heading to Wiltshire, also worth seeing:

1. Avebury stone circles

2. Chalk horses in Cherhill

3. Silbury Hill

3. West Kennet longbarrow

It's well worth the trip to Stonehenge and Salisbury is definately worth touring. When I visited Stonehenge you could stand right next to the stones. However, things changed when Chevy Chase reversed into them and knocked them over while he was on his European vacation...Laughing

Cheers,

Bob

There is a feeling of awe when you are around the circle at Stonehenge. Just knowing that they are thousands of years old, and that ancient man (and maybe women too) hefted those stones many, many miles, leaves you with a sense of reverence.

I would say it's definitely worth the trip.

I know you can get day trips from London to Stonehenge, and they may even take in Avebury, which is also worth the visit. Oh, and I love the gift shop at Avebury too.

Stonehenge is worth seeing but its a shame its so commercialised, its all fenced off, you have to walk round a path which takes you by the stones, but it all helps to take the magic away from it. Avebury is much better i think, its a lovely little village, which is surrounded by the stone circle, its not far from Stonehenge, but much better atmosphere i think.

I do like the new (well new to me) history tour things they have at Stonehenge. I always want to know all about the history, and I think these do a great job. (sorry to call them 'these' but I don't know what else to call them.

Talking about good jobs, the Roman Baths at Bath have an absolutely wonderful tour now. Well worth the expense of getting in.

I loved Stonehenge. It was smaller than I expected and nearer the big roads but it is just one of those places you have to visit.

I loved seeing it, but felt it has no real magic anymore, its like looking at an animal in a cage thats too small!!!  I know its just because its a victim of its own popularity, so would probably be destroyed now if the crowds weren't kept from climbing on it!  but I love Avebury because its more intimate, you feel part of something thats VERY old! and its a lovely place!
