What was our own reaction when we first saw her come on to the stage? I shared this with another site I post to, and here is a wonderful reply from one of my cyber friends. ....the reactions first displayed by the audience and judges were not unexpected. In most societies, those who have beauty on the outside are immediately rewarded without having to exhibit any talent or inner beauty, while those who lack that outer beauty are assumed to be lacking talent and inner beauty as well. How else would you explain Paris Hilton?? Take a good look at TV and movie stars- not exactly a slice of REAL life, are they? With the advent of Music Television, even singers and musicians have to be beautiful in order to really make it big. Anyone remember Christopher Cross? He was a hit maker until music videos killed his career because he wasn't purty for the camera. Even the down-home country music stars have to look all Hollywood glam if they're going to be accepted by our fickle, beauty worshipping society. What we saw from the audience and judges was a mirror of today's expectations and our willingness to turn away from that which doesn't immediately please our eye. Susan blew them all away, and hopefully caused many to rethink their values, even if only for a moment or the time it takes to get to the end of this competition. I will cheer her on from across the pond and pray that TRUE talent wins out in the end!!! FABULOUS!!! |

Maybe Susan and last years winner Paul Pott will make society realize looks are not everything. I hope that if she wins or not she will have the opportunity to make her dreams come true. This really touched me and my girls...Sammie cried and so did I!! |
