I thought I'd start a thread for interesting tid-bits from the day's news; you know, the things that may not be worth an entire thread by themselves but are still interesting and worth mentioning.

Good idea, Diana. You are right, sometimes you want to mention something, but opening a whole new thread seems a bit of a waste.

I hope we can find some good as well as the bad in the news. Saying that, the big news over here is the death of little Sandra Cantu, and the alleged rapist and murderer being a woman.

City to Address Dating Violence:

Boston, MA:  The city's health department will hold a public forum on dating violence today, following a troubling teen survey that found many youths accept such violence as common-place.

The survey was conducted after the high-profile incident in February when hip-hop start Chris Brown was accused of beating his girlfriend, singer Rihanna. However, nearly half of teens responding believed Rihanna was to blame.

I don't know about anyone else but I find it appalling and frightening that a majority of young people (especially girls) think that violence in relationships is common-place and they believe the woman is most often to blame. Shocking!

Sue, that is shocking! I am always floored when a woman is responsible for these kinds of acts. There is a great line from the movie "The Crow" which says, "Mother is the name for God on the lips of every child".

Children just naturally trust women, whether it's someone they know or not, and that a woman could betray that kind of trust enrages me. Yell

Boston Metro News: In Downturn, Babies Cut From Family Plan

The recession is influencing more Americans to opt out of parenthood with abortions and vasectomies, industry experts say.

The National Abortion Federation hot line is ringing off the hook, according to the group's president, Vicki Saporta. "We are currently getting more calls from women who report that they or their partner have recently lost their job, and we are also hearing from more women facing eviction,"she said.

"The financial crisis is affecting more than just low-income families. Now more middle-class and working-class families are facing the types of problems that we've heard from low-income women."

The reach of the recession may stretch beyond women's reproductive decisions to those of men, as the American Urological Association reports a roughly 50 percent increase in the number of vasectomies in the past four to six months, which they attribute in part to the ailing economy.

Personally, I'd rather see more vasectomies (and other measures that prevent pregnancies) than to see an increase in abortions.  I am all for a woman's right to chose but I find the use of abortion as a birth control measure to be cowardly and irresponsible. Just my humble opinion!

London England:  Newborn Baby Fed Fabric Softener

A newborn baby nearly died after hospital staff fed her fabric softener. The blunder occurred when U.K. hospital workers fed the child from a bottle brought in by the mother - but which contained a liquid fabric softener. "This is a...mother who wanted to make sure her baby had soft blankets," a hospital worker told the U.K.s Sun newspaper.

What!!! Yell

ROFL!!! What are you reading Paul?! Laughing

Ron, I've heard rumors of that too, and I think it's awful!  How humiliating, and you are right, it will stop a number of people from flying simply because the can not afford it. I'll bet they wouldn't let two skinny kids who could squeeze into one seat get away with paying for only one seat.

Bull In China Shop------well, not exactly---its, Bull In Supermarket  as an escaped bull in County Mayo caught the attention of shoppers in a supermarket after it wandered in. The farmer who'd lost his bull came in to save the day when he was then promptly chased back out the door by his bull !Smile
