According to the news this morning an adult shopping in an Asda store was not permitted to purchase a bottle of wine at the checkout because he had his 15 year old daughter with him, the cashier refused to sell it. Each cashier has a legal responsibility I know, but how stupid is this? Does it mean then that we must now only buy it when the kids are not around? I don't think so and if it were me I would tell Asda exactly where to stick their alcohol and go to a shop instead.....Oh, err, well what is Asda? Good question what is Asda for then, boycott them, that's what I say!! So who would boycott Asda based on this stupid example set by a cashier?

Well, you'll always get the odd cashier, so maybe not based on that example. Saying that there's a number of so called adults i'd like not to be served alcohol!! whether with children or not!!

Asda/Wallmart however are a pretty nasty company, quite aggressive so i'm led to believe, i.e opening shops running at a loss in small towns, until all the shops go out of business and the town is reliant on the asda/wallmart. They then close the shop, forcing the people of the town to travel miles to the big store!! nasty tactics!  but to be honest i think most/all supermarkets play similar games! i really try not to use supermarkets if poss, but you have to sometimes. All my Veg and fruit is delivered via an organic local box scheme, and it tastes so much better than the rubbish you get at the supermarkets, it really does!!

Hi Ron, i had the 'pleasure'  of working for the said company as a part-time employee for 12 months before I 'retired'.  All employees of this company are till trained and have to man the tills if more than two persons are in the queue. The till (check-out) operator as an individual is the one that will be prosecuted if he/she sells items such as knives, lighter fuels, spirits, wines and beers (even chocolate liquors) to underaged customers, and the company will not pay the fines for these employees. They are given training and updated guidelines including asking anyone who appears to be under 21 for proof of age.(even if the lawful age is 18)

The Authorities set the laws, and operate undercover surveylance of these stores, the employer sets the guidlines to their staff, but its the descretion of the checkout operator who they sell to. A checkout operator could loose their job as well as being heavily fined, and attract a 'criminal record' if they mistakenly sell to underaged customers. There must have been other reasons that this sale didnt go ahead, ie there may have been no proof that the adult was this minors  father etc. It may have been that this checkout operator knew this customer, many young persons hang around these supermarkets hoping they can persude adult friends or even strangers to buy them alchohol.

In answer to your question, No I would not boycott this store as they are, in my opinion, seen to be acting responsibly in this age when even some so-called 'adult' customers dont .

We need to get rid of the Chav culture. Here's why here!

Where does a 14 year old get the money to afford that every night eh? This boils down to her parents and they should be held responsible for her crimes. See how long it takes them to get fed up and do something about her behaviour. Sounds like she is an alcoholic already now though. I suppose my taxes will pay for someone to dry her out! Yell

Yeah, I've said the same Babs! I reckon we should arrive at the checkout and accidentally drop the bottle! They would soon realize that their protest was a lot less than ours! Drop em, I say!!
