I am particularly interested in the so-called Wars of the Roses, the political and military struggle for power between the dynastic houses of York and Lancaster from 1455-1487, beginning with the Battle of St. Albans and ending with the Battle of Stoke. I am also interested in architectural innovations of the mid-14th to late 15th centuries, particularly in the area of churches. I love the addition of fan vaulting to so many churches during this period, one of the peculiarly English hallmarks of the Perpendicular Gothic style. I have attached a photo of one of my favorite sites for fan vaulting (the first in England, c. 1351)--the cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral: Picture by Rob Faleer Gloucester Cathedral, formerly Gloucester Abbey, is thought by many scholars to incorporate the first truly Perpendicular Gothic architectural elements of any medieval church. Also, many of you may recognise the cloisters as having appeared several times in the Harry Potter movies! |
