The other day while driving I saw two of the most beautiful birds. They were smallish and solid black with red wings. I have never seen those kinds of birds before and they were striking because of the red wings against the shiny black bodies. Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of them, but by my description can anyone tell me what kind of birds they were?

They were probably Red-winged Blackbirds.

regarding birds,---yesterday at 8am as i was opening curtains i spotted a sparrow hawk with its freshly caught breakfast --a collared dove it was a sight i have never seen before and one i dont think i will ever see again my lawn was full of feathers as the hawk started to devour its victim.        it lasted for close on an hour then it clasped the dove in its claws and headed off to a nearby wood, unfortunately i didnt get a picture.

Right you are, Sue. :-) That is them exactly; only they were much more striking in person.

James, experiences like that are one in a million. Like something you'd see on a wild life documentary.

Red-winged Blackbirds tend to like wetlands and their call is a very distinctive high-pitched trill. We have a marsh near our house and Red-winged Blackbirds visit our birdfeeders every day. Beautiful birds--the males at least!

How have you been, Diana? I hope some opportunities are opening up for you.
