the price of 'booze' (minimum price set per unit) will go up in the pubs due to increase in vat and the levi put on alc duty (a double stealth tax). Notice though that it was announced as a measure to curb drinking, now I'm all for that as I think we have a hugh problem with alcohol but as most of the problem is the ease of purchase (The supermarkets should be stopped from selling it), from supermarkets who bankroll the government, they (the fat cats), will only get richer, whilst the Pub landlords will fold and a 'quite hour at the pub' would sadly, be a thing of the past.

we do have a "booze"problem in this country with the younger element,it isnt what they consume in the bars and pubs its what they drink before they leave home.

Thats what I mean James, the ordinary pubs arent making much out of it anymore, they survive on bar meals but they still have to put the hours in and keep the place heated and pay staff. I bet if the big supermarkets stopped selling the stuff half of them would close down. Lets get back to the old 'off license' sales, and regulate their sales to set hours and prices.

i couldnt agree with you more--but lets getanother thing sorted--what abouthe appearance of the staff these days.

the decline of most english pubs started when the breweries introduced a manager system doing away with the old "landlord"as he was known,he would always be there with a decent smile, well dressed and a decent pint.

when the managers took over that was the beginning of the end for the english pub, what happened?the suits were changed for track-suits,jeans,t shirts trainers and the take it or leave it attitude took over.

you will go a long way now to find a well run pub---anyone can get one.

Regardless of the price of alchohol those who are hooked on it will get it one way or another, so the excuse to increase prices to stop the drunken kids throwing up (because thats who it is supposedly aimed at) will make no difference whatsoever.

I think Mikes idea of the 'Off Licence' and regulation is the way 'back' again (yes the way back) it always did work so why not again?

I see you started another thread covering the same subject Mike. Is that because you couldn't find this thread, or down to you being 'lazy' shall we say?

Now assuming it was not through laziness (of course it's not is it?) it might mean that you didn't know how to find this thread without searching forever, so in future all you need to do is type the subject that you are looking for into the google box at the bottom of every page and bingo!

I will add the link that you found showing the comparisons hereafter.
