And yet, by what strange luck I don't know (but hope it continues), we have never been burgled. Both my daughter and son have been and I have seen how traumatic the experience was for them. On one occasion my son & a group of friends were hiking in the mountains and sleeping in a cave overnight, when their backpacks were all stolen - while they were sleeping and not one of them heard anything. |

We lived in a more country type neighbourhood, and my dad had some plumbing supplies delivered into the garages, for his work in the morning. My brother & I sat on the floor by the big picture-windows and looked outside, watching for the parents to return...in reality-we were the snoops to alert the others in the house if we saw them lol- but...a van pulled into our drive. ALERT....they got out and started loading all this newly delivered bathrooms fixtures into their van. I called the police and told them and they came down right away and got the guys. We were in the house scared to death but in a small town (back then) it was not uncommon to leave the oldest child to tend to the others lol...but fortunately the cops came and got the 'bad guys'. The parents came home and all was better...BUT...anyone who is burgled experiences all kinds of emotions & thoiughts of safety for themselves and anyone with them. We were young back then, but there were 4 little white ghosts running around the house scared stiff. Had the burlgars attempted to come into the house....LORD only knows what 4 scared kids would have done to them...lol....it turned out ok for us...but wouldn't wish that on anyone. |

I am glad to say that as an adult living on my own I have never been burgled. However, I remember very well an incident that happened when I was about 14 years old. It was a cold winter's night and I was asleep in my bed when I was awakened by the sound of my bedroom door opening. It was not unusual for my two youngest siblings to crawl into bed with me when they had bad dreams or were just cold, so I assumed it was one of them. But a moment later the door opened and closed again. I thought they had decided to go back to their own room. I had just dozed back off when I heard a blood curdling scream coming from my mother's room. I, along with my other four siblings, jumped out of our beds (and our skin) to race to our mother's side. As I came around the corner I slammed smack dab into a strange, hooded figure. I screamed and he bolted out the front door. Fortunately, although shaken, my mother was unharmed as were the rest of us. We called the police and they told us that there had been a rush of similar attempted burglaries in the neighborhood by what they suspected were drug addicts looking for money. That, I am glad to say was the last time anything that scary has happened to me. It's a disconcerting feeling to know that a stranger was in our home and could have killed any one of us in our sleep! |

First two times it was smack window in and (whilst alams were going off) they grabbed the CHARITY BOX!!!!!!!! They got away with a few coins and caused such a mess but no damage or loss of stock. third time a rather upset young gentleman shall we say who had just been dumped by his girlfriend went up the High Street at nearly midnight kicking in a few windows. Damage to window and some cacti I keep in the shop window and one heck of a mess. Bookham is normally a really quiet place but yesterday (wednesday) it was balaclavas sledgehammers at the local jewelers in the middle of the afternoon!!!! Also in the last week thieves or thief were captured robbing the local and 24 hour manned FIRE STATION, desperation or just plain dumb? |

One vintage bike stolen from my garden, one garden shed ransacked with nothing taken, one smashed up the bedrooms while i was on holiday.I now have tiny security cameras all over my house so i can identify the people. Burglary introduces fear into the family life. To remove that fear my next step if i'm lucky, will be remote and noisy. Edited by: Dennis Bailey at:27th January 2011 00:27 |
