I've always said that...some kid asked me how I could stand to go

places without an gun...and I said..we did pretty good as kids with the broken slap board with nails in the end...pulled off wooden boxes in times of need for secuirty..you ever notice those boxes use to be near the entry doors to markets and shops in the ole days. Usually held on by small nails...they would throw an pretty good attack at someone's adam apple. But tis true...surprise and others helping with intervention kind of did it all as well. We thought of self-defense...not "murder" back in those days when it came to robbers. But then again, no one locked anything up for most part...no one had to...people were more honest back then over-all. Many years ago when I worked retail,.we had this lady use to come in and she had an pair of footsy type infant PJ's...they had an lifetime warranty on them..they resembled more like worn out rag...but she'd ask for an new pair of PJ's and my boss always let her have them..he told us if anyone disagreed to let her have them..to take if off his pay...she was an single mom with no help...couldn't afford to buy much. We had bosses like that back then also...use to give the Sunday paper to people for free late Sunday nights before store closes....same for Christmas Tree on Christmas eve..before we had to be made as they say "accontable" for every dime and dollar...we'd say it was an store display and we tossed it out. The homeless made good use of this kind of charity back then...low income.. and we never hasseled them about it either.

I recall those days and how some shops did exactly as you say, Sue, but I think now it's a matter of the shops know that if they do this for even 1 person, they will find themselves having to do it for a vast number of addtional people simply because of current rules n regs...which , in my opinion, do need to be revised and made to have room for some discretion to be allowed on behalf of the general public, and how they wish to run their own private businesses or how the average citizen wishes to share things/ possessions of their own with others at no cost, without having to have it checked out by Fire/Safety/health rules n regs....there is no such thing allowed anymore that you can give a piece of furniture to someone in need, without all the legal jargon of paperwork to indicate you have the right to do this, that there has been no smoking in it, on it etc etc....such rules have taken away freedoms of those with common sense.

Just a thought.

That's the pity, Shirley.  A little old lady who confronted crooks like that in this country would probably get shot.

You may have a point there Ruth, our older generation over here in the UK arnt accustomed to guns, thats why they 'have-a-go' without thinking, I've done it myself. Its only later when you realy think about it that you realise how it could have gone.

Also back here in days gone by, the 'criminal element' had an unwritten code of conduct. Nowdays they have no respect for themselves never mind respect for others.

You couldn't be more right.

The video is all over the news here in the States. I understand why she didn't want her name published, as I wouldn't put it past these punks to give her a visit one day when they are back out on the streets. Which, sadly, will be far too soon.
