I had a couple of parakeets once that I killed by accident. It was a Saturday afternoon and the husband and son were out and about and I was home alone doing laundry. At lunch time, I put on a pot of water to boil for grits or noodles or something and went into the bedroom to fold the clean laundry, promptly forgetting about the water on the stove (cooker). Well, it was a teflon pan, and I let it boil dry. The birds cage was in the kitchen and the fumes from the teflon killed them so fast it wasn't funny. (Canary in the coalmine?) They just made this horrible little shriek and keeled over. It was horrible! I was so distraught, I dumped all my jewelry out of my jewelry box to make them a little coffin. It still makes me sad when I think about it.
