Air Force sea rescue squadron on the east coast of England in winter of 1953, when Britain was hit by what is considered its worst peacetime disaster of the 20th century. Fueled by winds exceeeding 100 MPH, the North Sea roared over seawalls on the night of Jan. 31, trapping thousands along the coast, demolishing homes and devasting vast tracts of land. When the sea swept through the Norfolk resort town of Hunstanton, Leming was amoung 500 men from his squadron at the nearby British air base at Sculthorpe who volunteered to help in the rescue.Leming couldn't swim, but he single-handedly saved 27 people...by loading them into an dinghy in repeated trips through flooded streets..he barely survived his rescue exploit. He was highly decorated by the US military and the British Government. He died Nov 4th in Bend, Oregon at 81 yeas old...he was planning an trip to Hunstanton unware the towns people were planning an special tribute to him at the event. After intial problems back then.. he ended up in an rubber suit and raft and stood in darkened waters nearly as deep as his 6 foot 3 feet frame to pick up surviors off roof tops and and windows helping them into the raft...his exposure suit eventually ripped and he collapsed...he learned the nurse treating him was ripping it off to treat him when he gained consciouness. The flood killed 307 people, 31 of them in Hunstanton..it damaged about 25,000 homes and more then 150,000 acres of land. In 1953 Leming became the first foreigner to receive Brtiain's George Medal for heroism during peacetime...two months later the town flew him and his fiancee to Enngland to be married in the Roman Catholic church in Hunstanton...after his enlisment expired he returned to the Pacific Northwest (USA)..where he later owned an security alarm company. It probably did it's best as an "Weight Watcher's" classroom. I was surprised reading this that England has such weather...though I think Cromwell's books have made mention that many ships in the past have went a ground in the area...and also along the channel also. If this is an recent picture of you..I feel like I know you from somewhere...perhaps in the news or something...not sure where at right now. |
