For me, I remember my two great uncles, Ernest and William Barrett, brothers. One died in the first Battle of the Somme and the other, two years later at the second Battle of the Somme. So young, so innocent, such a waste.

Then I remember my Uncle Bert (actually, Great Uncle) brother to the above boys. He passed away November 10th 1983. The last time I saw him was November 9th, selling poppies at our door, as he did every year in honour of his brothers.

Its also my Mum's birthday today. Born 11-11-11, she would have been 102 today.

I raise my glass to all.

We remember our eldest daughters partner L/Cpl Graham Shaw who was killed by an IED in Helmand Province in Afghanistan on 1st February 2010 the day after his 27th Birthday.

Our parents families, along with all the others who suffered that we didn't know, but without whom we wouldn't have the life that we have today, which when all is said and done is a good life.

God bless them all, we will never forget you...so sad that it had to happen!

Both my G/Fathers were 1st WW1 veterans who thankfully survived the war --one of them who had the same name as me was a driver and his daily task was driving a wagon to the front line loaded with ammunition what a job that was.

quotePosted at 19:55 on 11th November 2013
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The Larks, still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, nd now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
