Now that it is possible to sell images on PoE, I wonder whether anyone has given a thought to 'Model Release' i.e. for those images which include a recognisable person, then a Model Release form should be completed? It is not a major problem, since most of the images on PoE are of buildings and landscapes, and relatively few include recognisable people. I assume street scenes where people are not easily recognisable would not require model release, in any case how would you do it for a crowd? I am thinking more of scenes where there may be one or two clearly identifiable people.

I can think of a case where I refrained from selling an image because of lack of Model Release. The image was a candid shot of a group of people sitting outside a pub.  A local Estate Agent wished to buy the image but I felt uneasy because the individuals in the group could be clearly seen, and without Model Release, there may have been unforeseen complications.

The Vat threshold is currently £79,000 before you have to register John and thats a whole lot of photos sold, so I wouldn't worry unduly.

It's not the VAT I am worried about, Ron, it's the individual's tax liability. HMRC will regard income from selling photos as earned income, and will therefore be liable to Income Tax, in the same way as casual income from private tutoring etc. The only way out of it is if the photographer is a limited company, in which case he may be able to offset the tax liability against business expenses.

A very valid point Edward but as you suggest maybe not quite so critical on POE, but well worth bearing in mind. All the major photo stock agencies / libraries will insist on a release for recognisable faces in a photo.

Yes, I understand your point Edward but even in the case of potential income from POE the average person can earn somewhere near £10,000.00 before tax is payable. That said, if you are successful pay up, that's what this land is all about, isn't it?

Ha, here we go again, a simple statement that could easily create a whole new thread. lol
