What are peoples thoughts on Digital watermarks. I noticed that some pictures have them, some don't.

Hi Sue. Personaly, I dont use them. People use them, mainly, to protect thier copy right. I have all my originals, complete with the exif information, backed up on my computer and on disk, and on memory sticks. The exif information can prove that the photo's were taken by you, giving info that is lost when photo's are downloaded from the site. Anyway, watermarks spoil what may be a good photo.

I Have to say that I agree with Peter and unless someone wants to make a lot of money from my images - some hope! I am content to allow them to be used.

I think that it's probable that the images on POE are not large enough to give the high definition required by magazines for example. On this site they can look marvelous but the original flies are probably even better. Not yet used watermarks and have an open mind about how good or bad they are.

I suppose watermarks always mar the photos, but unfortunately they're often a necessity. I use them on pbase where I post my images in relatively large formats (1680px wide); almost everything can be worked around in imaging software but rooting out a more complex watermark placed in a conspicuous spot on the picture is in most cases too laborious and time-consuming. The images here are postage-stamp size so I'm not really concerned.
People will often use someone else's pictures on their websites, blogs and suchlike without asking for permission first even when the images are watermarked. And I guess it's a plague we just need to come to terms with, internet is a blessing and a curse ;-)...

Morning all! My view on pictures with copyright or watermarks used on Poe is that possibly, just possibly, these identity tags are being used by professional or semi professional photographers to display their stock or talent, some with links back to their own sites. If this is the case then perhaps they should contribute some financial support to Poe for the use of our 'shop window' and help the site to function. (My personal view as a member only of course)

I suppose even when watermarked, a skilled person can edit it out with Photoshop. Not worth the effort in my view. Also, point well made Michael.
