If I were starting from scratch Krissy, I'd look at the lower end of the d-SLR cameras such as the Canon XTi or Nikon D40.  If you have a camera shop that sells used cameras, the Canon 20D/ 30D or Nikon D70/D70s are excellent cameras, and with people upgrading to the lastest models, good used buys get overlooked.
