I want to buy a compact i can take to work with me, i'm not to keen on taking my DSLR to work incase it gets broken/stolen etc... also it takes a fair bit of space up. Because i work a lot of nights, i see the sun rise quite often and it gets frustrating when i haven't got my camera with me, and the mobile phone camera really can't capture it well. I'm looking for something i can maybe fit in my pocket, but lets me alter the light, etc.. allowing me to get sunrises without the camera over exposing the sky, Most of the new compacts seem to do everything for you, and you can't alter the settings properly, i don't want this!!

Anybody got any ideas???

Thanks JSmile

I just love my Nikon Coolpix 7600.

I takes wonderful pictures, and the macro is fantastic. Here is one of my sunrise shots, not the best but not bad either (there is another one on my page).

It's not slim line, but I think it's FAB!

Canon DIGITAL IXUS 70 is escellent Jason, and good value. Just wish it did more than 3xzoom but takes really good macro pics!

I think the Canon A1000 IS should also fit the bill. You can find it here www.dpreview.com  under Camera Database>Canon. Has exposure compensation/ manual overide which seems what you're looking for, Jason.

Hi Jason,

Came across this old(ish) post and would be interested to know if you made a choice (purchased?) a compact and have you been happy with it?

Hi I know I'm not in very good books

but I thought I would like to help out

You want to buy a compact

What a good idea so you can take to work with you

I don't blame you for not being keen on taking your DSLR to work incase it gets broken/stolen etc

I got one given to me a few of months ago, brand new still boxed up

it's a Samsung-ST-50

I was working away & took a few sunsets here is a link to two of them taken with the Samsung ST-50

Jason:

Paul's suggestion of www.dpreview.com is excellent. You might also want to look at Steve's Digicams at www.steves-digicams.com for some very helpful information.

Cheers!

A bit late, but I'd check out the Canon S90.  See it at kenrockwell.com
