thanks cath, I've just Google earthed it and can now see that its the south east bastion tower on the walled garden on the Castle Howard estate in north yorkshire at Malton, north of the city of york. i'm glad someone identified it. do I get a 'brownie point' for suguesting it was facing south-east and not on a hill? lolSmile

Its safe to ask on this occasion - I had kidnapped my mother to take me to all the places the ancestors had lived and this was a little side trip. I can only presume that Castle Howard must have been closed that day.  Because I only have a very long view of it and this wall.  I was probably trying to find a way of peeping in and getting some pics, but obviously that didn't work out. 

A similar thing happened to us at Little Moreton Hall, it was all wrapped up in plastic and was being renovated!!! So I got a nice autumn picture of the car park, lol Smile
