They were great cameras to experiment with and they were much cheaper than the more fashionable Japanese cameras such as the Olympus OM-1. The other Russian camera I remember from that era was the Lubitel TLR, which I think sold for about £10 in 1980. I owned one for a while and it was a great intro to TLR cameras. |

Although the recommendations you got with your roll of film were always fairly reliable. Then moved on to Olympus OM1 and eventually Canon F1, both of which were 'match needle' only. The only automation I ever had was on various compacts I had over the years. The all singing all dancing auto metering systems of the modern digital camera are amazingly good in average lighting but a bit of thought is still required where difficult light situations are involved. At least with digital you can experiment with many different settings whereas with film you had to try to get it right in 2 or 3 shots, hence why most photographers had a light meter Nowadays I occassionally set the basic reading from the camera and then set to manual and adjust shutter and aperture as I think fit, just to make sure all those years of experience is not lost. An exersize well worth pursueing if not shooting anything of great importance. Edited by: Dave John at:16th March 2014 21:05 |

I guess the approvals are being set at a higher level for now and guess the 5* rating might still be the norm. |

Let's hope it is a trend that continue or maybe the powers that be have already initiated a stricter acceptance standard? Edited by: Dave John at:16th March 2014 22:30 |

It was a chance shot as I had planned a long walk along the beach in the icy wind and glorious sunshine. I parked by the lifeguard station and saw the Iron Man who, coupled with the advancing tide just had to be captured by the Nikon. No walk along the beach, as there was no beach! As John said then it seemed that the voting system was ' 5 or nothing '. And if I recall correctly everyone who responded agreed that a change would be good in that 5 stars as a norm was not really correct. Having just caught up with the recent uploads since the 'downtime' I notice that nothing much has changed on this score. Admittedly as Vince pointed out the quality od submissions does seem to have improved, but also the number of submissions is not as high. Maybe Chris and Sarah have instigated new guidelines for acceptance of images. If so I fully endorse that. Whilst going through the current 5 pages of 'new' images a thought crossed my mind. I do get the feeling that whatever the first couple of ratings are is what is then generally acepted should follow. I don't know what programming would be involved but I think a better way to get genuine ratings would be if the ratings were not shown until the viewer has made their entry. Hope that makes sense and you understand what I am trying to say. I always try to formulate my comments before looking at what has been written before. Just a thought . . . .. |
