Advertising is a big help. Be careful with your spending and make sure you have enough money to keep it going for the five years without having to go into debt. Both friends did not have the financial backup. One has claimed bankruptcy and the other sold her business for $1.00. Otherwise I have no experience but wish you all the luck in the world and hope your new business is a huge success!! Big hugs to take care of the stress and ease the fright! |

Was a Director of an electrical distribution co. in West London from 1973-83 whence the business was sold; then a manager of a similar business for another 5 years; then--like Jason, always been in jobs where I'm my own boss and left to get on with my job--I haven't seen my manager at all this year. Well---people might say its good being your own boss---but you won't really be----all your customers will now be your boss. On another thread, Ruth asked me if I'd heard of working an 8 hour day? Yep--last did that in 1970, and then 12-15 hours days ever since for 38 years. You'll have your ups and downs Rick, and for me, just as important as all the financials, is to have a business you enjoy doing. Two priniciples I always stuck to were---1 giving my customers excellent value and service, and 2, I always kept my promises to them. |

We were told it takes the first five years before you generally see an profit that is worthy. I ran an business within an business, I would say, 1. Have at least an couple of good employees that you can count on thick or thin, and pay them decently.., and 2. always have an alternative plan in case something doesn't come out quite like you were expecting, like my aunt, whose "Fudge" never set correctly, so we used it for making hot chocolate. |

I wanted to let you know if you are still up for the hug, I'm here for you, friends always need hugs. I hope things are going better for you now, as this thread hasn't been brought up in a while. You know me I've got to add my 2 cents worth in, meaning I've got to add my comment to. I have been wanting to start a business, as well. Unsure about how to really even start. I figured I'd better'd get some college information in my brain, and knowldge of how to run it properly. As, I don't want to invest in it, mess up somewhere, or get sued, and then end up bankrupt, before I even really get very far. My idea is somewhat close to what you do. How ever, I want mine to be kid based. And that's about all I can tell you for right now, as I don't want anyone stealing my idea. My daughter has confidence in me, she I don't think, realizes just how much she is my peacon of light, and hope that I will make it. I know alittle about business, I'm lost when it comes to IRA's, stocks & bonds, insurance, paper work, computer upgrade knowledge. I know in business, if you aren't on top of things, you will be left behind. I listened to my mom, and went to Beauty School (Cosmetology School). To make her happy, which made me miserable, but I passed. Because I am to slow at doing hair, and because of my back, I am unable to do hair. I miss it, as I once was going to open my own shop. My back wouldn't let me. They expect you to get the person in do a shampoo/ hair cut in 30 mins, or less. Some clients, I by no means could have this done. I was always given the pedicures, and some perms. They hated doing the feet, I didn't mind. Sorry, got caried away there, My dream and still is my dream is to return to college, and work on getting my Associates Degree in Business Management. I will be satisfied if I can at least get the Associates Degree. Anyway, if there is ever anything I can do to help feel free to let me know, that's what friends are for, for love and support, and encouragement. Take care and stay safe. Your business sounds like it could be fun as well as profitable (some day if not immediately). I think the important bit is that you have the courage to step out and do something on your own which I assume is also something that you truly enjoy. The very best of luck to you. If I ever plan a party, wedding, etc. in your area, I will definitely call you first. |
